Vinpok PokMag Bolt-S: World’s First USB-C Magnetic Cable For MacBook Pro

I have been very late to the party to the world of USB-C, that I owned my first couple USB-C devices, namely the OnePlus 5 and the Nintendo Switch. There is abundance of options of USB-C cables that supports Quick Charge technology that I could easily go with battery packs that can do the same.

Look at the fact that the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X support Qi Wireless Charging technology, plugging in a static charging cable seems to be turning into a pain in the foreseeable future. Yet, it is a more cost-effective and handy way. And USB-C appears to be the future along this path and Apple made it towards its Mac line-up that you can yet plug-in the new iPhone X without getting an external adapter, despite of controversy.

One of the reasons for the controversy is that this move terminated MagSafe, one of the most welcomed proprietary technologies that comes genuinely from Apple. It is super handy and it works perfectly as of today. Many crowdfunded attempts failed but Vinpok is determined to pick up from where everyone has left off.

Vinpok PokMag Bolt-S 07

Vinpok Bolt is the world’s first USB-C magnetic cable with support for 87W charging of 15-inch MacBook Pro. With USB-C connectors on both ends, the Bolt Cable is capable to power up any 13-inch or 15-inch MacBook Pros, and of course many other devices that have a USB-C port for charging. Huge shoutout to Vinpok for sponsoring a sample unit of Bolt Cable to make this review possible. Despite that we do not have a USB-C MacBook to review with, we tested with the latest OnePlus 5 on its performance.

Vinpok Bolt ships in a decent packaging with fine-printed details and product information, features and compatibility. What is more exciting is the bundle you get from Vinpok Bolt. Inside the box, you will find the Bolt Cable itself with a wrap that keeps the cable neatly coiled and tangle free.

Another nice touch is the carrying case. Not only you can snap in the cable itself but also put the magnetic tip that can be securely in the inner pocket of the carrying case.

The review unit also ships with an additional magnetic tip so I can attach to my other devices such as the Nintendo Switch. However, the tip is very small with only 8.8mm, which is ⅓ smaller than the tiniest magnetic tip size on the market, that you must take good care of it as you may easily bury it somewhere on the desk.

First impression

The Bolt Cable works perfectly as advertised and as you might have expected on an older generation MacBook with MagSafe, like the MacBook Pro mid-2012 that I am still working on with. Simply plug in the magnetic tip provided into the USB-C port on your device and you are good to go.

The build quality for the cable, connector and magnetic tip is great. The connectors are solid that no parts feel loosen. The most impressive one is the cable itself. It feels very durable as advertised, and it is not easily tangled up no matter how to wrap it around on the desk or in your bag.

The ultimate indicator for whether or not a charging cable is good is the charging speed. We have run a few tests on the same power plug and charger that has a USB-C 5V/3A output as well as a USB-A 5V/2.4A output, as well as the OnePlus Dash Charge charger and USB-C cable.

The result is generally expected. When compared with OnePlus’ proprietary Dash Charge technology that pushes a higher amperage that normal charger does perform better over the others even it is C-to-C. Although it is 50% slower, it is still on par with USB-A 5V/2.4A Quick Charge which is equally decent if you are not using a OnePlus device.

For $35, the Vinpok Bolt USB-C charging cable is appropriately priced. You get pretty much what you paid for. Quality cable, good build quality, decent charging speed, more importantly the compatibility across a wide range of devices.
